Beauty Sleep: Practicing Good Skincare While Asleep

Good skincare does not always have to be a conscious act. It can also be passive.

Not many people know that our skin does the most to repair and rejuvenate itself at night while we are sleeping by following our circadian rhythm. Hence the phrase- beauty sleep.

During sleep is when our skin begins to repair at a cellular level. It goes into a sort of recovery mode.

While sleeping a stress hormone called cortisol decreased. This act lets the body repair from daytime damage.

The most beneficial behind the scenes repair at night is that your body is making new collagen. Collagen is a protein that plumps the skin and decreases wrinkles.

Things to help amplify your beauty sleep:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day so you go to bed hydrated. This will help maintain skin elasticity.

  • WASH YOUR FACE! Wash your face before bed. I cannot stress this enough. I cringe when someone tells me they often forget to wash their face.  Washing your face before bed will unclog your pores, remove dirt, oil, makeup and dead skin cells. Sleeping with makeup on will cause acne, speed up the aging process and dehydrate the skin.

  • You want your bedtime products to have full absorption on your skin. As we talked about earlier this is when your skin is taking in those products and doing the most work.

  • The #1 hands down, no questions asked- product EVERYONE should be using at night is a retinol. Our favorite is SkinBetter’s Alpharet for normal to dry skin or Alpharet Clearing serum for oily/acne prone skin. <purchase here> link: http://skinbetter.pro/lusineskin

A common reaction I get from clients when discussing night time skincare is, “I’m so tired at night and just want to get in bed.” It takes 66 days for a habit to become automatic so if you can do it for two months it will become second nature.

A solution I offer when someone says this to me is finding a cute basket or tote at Target. Put your night time skincare in it and set it on your nightstand. Then all you have to do is wash your face and jump into bed. While you are laying in bed trying to wind down, watching TV or reading- you can reach over and apply your different products as you lay there.

Easy peasy.

  • Keep on glowing, Cari
